2010 Buck of the Year
Doc 187

It was mid Oct. with a large acorn crop we were seeing glimpses of great bucks but with them being in the hardwoods there was no pattern and hard to spot in the thick cover. We chose to sit on a hill overlooking a lot of country hoping to see something traveling an edge. We had a little front coming thru with a little shower here and there which made the deer move early. This buck showed up an hour or so before dark but he was over a half mile away and I couldn't determine if this buck was for sure one of the top end bucks After about 20 mins of so of watching this buck at a distance I decided to try to stalk closer to check this buck out. We weren't really seeing anything else that looked mature so we started a stalk we finally worked to around 200 yds by now there was no doubt this buck was a shooter. As we were getting into position the buck came over a terrace and saw us move but didn't know what he had seen still he knew enough to change directions Light was fading fast the buck had dropped over the back side of the terrace and was traveling from right to left all we could see was antlers every so often when he raised his head. In my mind I thought we would let him work east of us with the east wind then we would make a move up behind him hopefully undetected for a shot. Apparently Doc had a different plan! The terrace had a low spot and exposed a small target of the buck Doc took advantage of the moment when the gun went off I was surprised I was not expecting it The buck went straight down. When we walked up there I couldn't believe how big this buck was 187 in of antler and a body weight of 260-270lbs. Doc's reaction was "You couldn't tell this was a BIG BUCK from that hilltop?" I had no response
